Carnivals are cultural festivities, the concept varies from island to island however somethings still remain the same across the bacchanal roads of carnival. Be enlighten by many walking stories as many costumes of caribbean carnival portray various themes with the designs.Here’s a look at carnival with emphasis on Martinique’s ‘Vaval’.

Though many themes are portrayed during this display of festive works one remarkable able is how mockery is made of current affairs and trending characters of the time. Be it a political figure or notorious person who was trending in the news, he becomes the carnival King and is released on the last day which is Ash Wednesday.

 

Clearly, lots of commentary to go around during this time and since this tradition originated in the mist of colonial times it reflects a merger of African and european elements. It challenge European traditions with role play,  men dress as brides and women dress as the groom.  It portrays the things that have become normalized in recent times, they also portray a pregnant bride and womanizers, all reflective of people in their society.

Festivals ensure culture is kept relevent, it tells stories of our` past and reinterpret current affairs in unique forms of expression.
